This episode is a fun one! So fun, I recorded the intro portion twice! (Audacity ate the first one. Thank goodness for good notes!)
This show contains: the excitement leading up to meeting Nancy Bush, plans for the retreat with Sara, details about the latest CONTEST! Socks, socks, socks - listen to the show for all the details, and the deadline is midnight on February 6th to enter (leave an Odeo comment to increase your chances to win! Or type a comment here), and details about the upcoming podcast 1 year anniversary show! You could win an mp3 player!
If you are in the Boston area, let me know if you want to meet up for knitting on Superbowl Sunday. I can’t wait to knit on the east coast!
Thanks again to Staci for being such a gracious guest. We will definitely have to do this again, and hopefully coordinating it won’t be so crazy next time! And I slip up in the middle - Staci was looking for knitting tattoos and spotted Julia’s - not the other way around. Sorry, Julia!
I haven’t forgotten about your “Favorite Things” Odeo comments. Coming up in future shows we will have those, along with (hopefully) an interview with Nancy Bush, details about my trip to Koenig Farms in Kentucky, interviews with other knitters, and so much more, I can’t even think of it all!

Yay! iTunes’s downloading the episode right now!!!! I’m getting my knit-podcast fix! (listened to all the Lime & Violet episodes already and now I’m considering getting the rest of the KnitPods out there to listen to…BTW, how come L&V’s not on your list?)
Will get back to you again when I’ve listened.

[…] Even though I had to record the first part of the show twice (Audacity ate my files!), I think that the latest podcast might just be the best show ever. Check it out and let me know what you think! Pointy Sticks - Episode 13, The Pink Show. I did a guest chat with Staci which makes up most of the show, and it amuses me to no end. We had a great time doing it, and I really think it shows! […]

Love the picture of you in Faith. This one looks much more true to color. Faith turned out really, really nice. Good job.

Hi Christine! I just listened to the podcast! I read visit Staci’s blog pretty regularly - what a treat to find out that you’re knitting pals! I’ll be smiling all afternoon!

I can’t wait to listen to the podcast, but I have to say this first: That sweater is just gorgeous on you, don’t you dare rip it. It is lovely and flattering and it looks really comfy and stylish. You will have this for years! Really, don’t you come anywhere near that thing with a sharp blade. I registered for SXSW - how about you?

It looks comfy and stylish. Good job on everything knitting-related and good luck with that surgery.I hope the retreat with Nancy Bush was fun!

Hi Christine,
I listened to the podcast and see that, by now, you’ve met (and dined!!) with Nancy Bush–how exciting.
I really enjoyed this episode and look forward to your next one.
Also, I was excited to see your Faith jacket!! I just may need to knit one now!

The name of the country is not “The Holland”. It’s either “Holland” or “The Netherlands”. I was going to overlook this when you said “The Holland” once in episode 12, but then in episode 13 you say it three times! Sorry - I just can’t stand mispronounciations.
Otherwise - great podcast. I’m glad you are back! Best wishes for your upcoming shoulder surgery.

Ruth - Christine and I both say “The Holland” because of a goof she made in a podcast long ago. She meant to say “The Hague” (in Holland), and said “The Holland” instead. It stuck. We both know what is correct, we just think it’s funny to say The Holland.

Early congratulations on your 1 year podcast anniversity (OK where did that word come from?) I mean anniversary.
You wanted to hear from more Canadians – I’m one, but I live in Finland, does that count? I don’t remember knitting socks growing up in Canada so I suppose that I knit my first ones when I moved here to Finland. I’ve only used two types of yarn to knit socks and they are from a Finnish company called Novita. The one I usually use is ‘7 Veljestä’ and the other is ‘Nalle’. Both are 75% wool and 25% polyamide. I haven’t looked at other sock yarns because Novita is all that my LYS has. Well it isn’t a yarn store but it also sells yarn.
Recently I’ve been knitting socks for a friend and her family. I like knitting socks because the actual knitting doesn’t take long and I’ve got a good pattern that was on the label of the Novita yarn. I don’t like knitting socks because I only use the same pattern! I should try another one but this one is so reliable and simple. Anybody have a suggestion of what sock pattern I should branch out with? Cuff down for me. I’ve never tried toe up and I don’t think that I ever will.

Your chat with Staci was really fun! Maybe we can hear more Knitting chats????
About socks, What can I say? I LOVE socks! I picked up knitting because I wanted to make socks for my sister. My first pair(and first project)in worsted weight took me almost two years. I then moved on to hats and scarves but my love affair with knitting and socks really started when I saw Cool Socks, Warm Feet by Lucy Neatby in my LYS. At first I thought that it was a trick of photography! No one could make socks that perfectly and with yarn that fine! One day I worked up the courage and marched into the LYS and bought the book, some yarn and needles. If she could make socks like that than I could too, even if it took me 100 trys! It only took me two trys and I have been knitting socks ever since. I mostly use my own patterns. I mix and match using Lucy’s gauge calculations and different toes and Heels. I have made top down and toe up. I started on double points and now I use two circulars and do both socks at once, No second sock syndrome for me!I don’t have a favorite sock yarn yet because I have not had the chance to buy what I really, really want, Hand dyed Sock yarn! I have my eye on Fearless fibers and Socks that Rock. I plan to knit some thigh high socks of my own design next and I’d really like to try the pomatomus pattern If I can convert it to fit me. (I have very little feet!)

Christine, I am sure you’re totally enjoying your sockish experience with Nancy Bush by now and I’m excited that you’re going to be interviewing her for the Pointy Sticks podcast! As much as I love all things sock-related and I’m super-impressed with Nancy Bush, I was just not going to be able to devote an entire weekend to Nancy, even if it meant staying at the Tremont.
So you see, I’m REALLY glad you’re bringing back the experience FOR us via your podcast. And, as a sidenote, I would LOVE it if you would interview Sara for your podcast — almost as much as Nancy Bush. She impresses me to no end!
Of course, you know I love the Faith Jacket you knit and I remember your trying to decide on which color to purchase! You definitely made the best choice.

Wow! I love socks, now. I hated the first pair I made. They were toe-up, very simple, but I hated doing the first one, and it sat for nearly a year.
For some reason, I got the gumption to knit the second one, and really loved it. I have no idea why! Since then, I’ve done two more toe-up pair, and just finished my first top-down pair this past week. They’re a really cool self-striping yarn, and I’ve worn them several times already!
By the way, your Faith Jacket is gorgeous!

Socks? Well they are easy and portable. Plain and simple. I have to admit that I love the basic stockinette stitch sock better than anything really. I like picking pretty yarn to show off rather than a pretty pattern. That way I really can bring it anywhere with me and not have to think about what I’m doing. I love knitting kids’ socks more than anything! Simple AND fast!!

I am a sock yarn nut. Living in Portland, OR I have more opportunity to stock up on Socks that Rock than the average…we can get it on the street - hee hee
Loved the podcast and am really excited to hear the Nancy Bush interview. I knit up the rib and cable socks from IK last year and gifted them to my mom, who loves them…
Keep up the great podcasting!

I just found your podcast and have enjoyed the last two eps very much. I’m currently knitting my second-ever pair of socks, though I took a break to do some of Knitty’s Fuzzy Feet so I guess that’d make three pairs. They make great portable knitting and I’m loving how I can learn to customize them to my foot dimensions. I look forward to a lifetime obsession with socks!

I would like to say that I am from a Houstonian family. My grandmother and her siblings (6) were born and raised in Houston and still living there. My father was born and lived in Houston till he was 35 and I was born and raised till I was 12 when my parents moved overseas. Just thought I would let you know about those of us who have deep roots in Houston.
I live outside the state because I married someone from Washington state.

Let’s see socks…
I love to knit socks because they are so pretty, and you can personalize them to your own taste.
I hate to knit socks because you have to make two! It takes a while, I am new to sock knitting- 4 pairs made. Except for my youngest DD’s socks, her’s are easy and small.
My favorite pattern, I have made them twice, is Knitty’s Monkey pattern. I want to try Knitty’s Red Herring, and Jaywalkers. I have only made top down but I want to try toe up one day.
I have only used Socketta, Knitpicks and a cone of unknown sock yarn. I just won 2 skeins of Gloss- so soft, can’t wait to try it.
I am a nurse, and on my lunch breaks, I knit socks- since I learned sock knitting a few months, that is about all I have made!

Socks are very special to my sisters and I. We lost our Mom this last Christmas season and my sisters and I knit self patterning socks as we took care of her at home. We were so honoured and privilaged to have such a special Mom.She would help us with anything, sewing, quilting and knitting (she is the only one of us able to follow a crochet pattern…the rest of us just fake it). Mom was great at taking out our mistakes, fixing our errors and handing it back to us. The last hour of her life I struggled with a german heel, I’d lost the stitches and even though I’d counted it many times I couldn’t figure it out. I finally put it down and concentrated on Mom. Hours later I picked up the sock to figure out where I’d gone wrong and the sock was right. I’m sure I’d been blessed with one more fix from my Mom….because that’s what Moms do best….they fix. My sisters and I have told this sock story many times and some believe and some people think we’re crazy. Whatever you want to believe I know that I have wonderful, warm and truely blessed socks. Thanks Mom, we love you to the ends of the earth and beyond. Thanks for asking about socks. We love your podcast (and the wicked song!)

I’m going to be brave and admit I’ve never listened to a Podcast because I don’t own an MP3 Player. I don’t really know much about podcasts but I think they’d keep me good company on my morning walks (I walk 4 miles every morning). I could listen on the computer, I know, but that would mean having all the boy noise in the background. I guess I need an MP3 player.
Socks are my all time favorite thing to knit. I always have a pair of socks going and usually have many more planned. My entire stash is sock yarn. I’ll have to explain more on my blog.

Happy Podiversary, Christine! Lyras are sweet little players, I listen to you on mine while I walk back and forth to work - and when it’s warm enough, while I walk and knit. I admit I never stopped to really think about why I love knitting socks. Now thanks to you, I’ve posted my own confessions on my blog.
For keeping me company at work when I can’t knit, thank you!

A great way to clean out stash.
Thanks for your hard work — times two on this podcast.

Hi Christine, Happy Podiversary! Now about those socks…! I have to admit to a constant addiction to sock knitting mainly because I commute for 1 1/2 - 2 hours a day on the train and socks are the only thing to keep me sane and not frustrated by the train delays - plus you get some fanstastic odd looks from the fellow passengers and I think some of the regular conductors are rather intrigued. My sock yarn stash is not as impressive as many as I usuallly buy sock yarn and then knit it up fairly soon after (within 6 months anyway!) I do have lots and lots of leftovers and while I keep thinking about starting a sock yarn blankie like Shelly (the Heathen Housewife) has done I’m intrigued to see how much of the leftovers can actually go back into a pair of socks!
I’m currently test knitting a pair of socks for Anna Tillman’s new book and these are just fantastic patterns - I can’t say more so we’ll all have to watch and wait!!

I’m another Canadian listener; I’m from BC.
About socks… I’m an inexperienced knitter - not exactly new, but I don’t knit as often as I’d like to because classes get in the way - and I’ve only made a few pairs of very basic socks so far. I’d like to be better at it, because socks seem like something that I can make with creative colours or patterns and still end up wanting to wear, and because I see so many beautiful socks on the internet.

Happy Anniversary, Christine. I’ve really been enjoying your podcast. Here’s to another great year of podcasting!
You asked about socks. Well, I love making socks. I almost always have a sock in progress. I’m a top-down sock knitter and I prefer the traditional heel flap; I find it fits my foot better. I really like the colors of Trekking yarn, but I find it kind of splitty to knit with. I think my favorite sock yarns I’ve used so far are Socks That Rock and Mountain Colors Bearfoot (the addition of mohair makes them so cozy).
39 Andrea // Feb 15, 2007 at 12:57 pm
I attempted to send you an odeo commment today… it’s my first time, so I’m not entirely sure it worked. It’s nothing exciting… just a hello from Canada.

Hi,
Had to let you know that you do have listeners in Asia. I’m writing to you from Singapore. However, I am a Minnesotan who’s just a loooong way from home. Not much wool or mohair over here )c:
Also wanted to let you know that the one of the children I taught when I lived in Malaysia was from Holland and she would have loved hearing it called The Holland. That’s certainly how SHE thinks of it.
So glad I found your blog and podcast. This was the first of your podcasts that I’ve heard. I look forward to listening more.
And about socks… I’ve never knit a sock. As I’ve been reading knitting blogs I’ve come to realize that many people love knitting socks. At first that mystified me since they seem like they’d be difficult. Then I started seeing how lovely so many of the designs were and now I know that there are socks in my future, but they will need to be gifts because we don’t wear socks in Singapore! (It is much too hot for socks.)
