Episode 9 - A Hint of Fall

October 12th, 2006 · 16 Comments

Fall is in the air, there is a certain crispness that can’t be described, and I am in the mood to knit sweaters!

Be sure to catch the complete slip-up that cracks me up in the middle of the show! Also, if you listen close, you can hear Chloe’s tags jingle in the background as she walks around, and you might even hear her sneeze.

- My new laptop is a Dell Latitude. I love it. I have a new microphone too, so let me know how the show sounds.
- Kid & Ewe is coming up! Texas *does* have a wool and fiber festival, November 10-12, 2006. Join us there for lunch on November 11th - post to the wiki to let us know if you are coming.
- Caro makes fabulous goods - have you seen my business card case? Check out her Etsy shop.
- Figure out the right number for your heels. Props to Donna for another great link. (Check out her alway changing sidebar!)
- Thanks to Caro, I now know how to make budget sock blockers and Julia clued me in on how to make a nice blocking board.
- Participate in the Red Scarf Project 2007. Visit Now Norma Knits for details.
- Sponsor Deb in the Light the Night walk.
- Thanks to Knitty D & The City, I am an honorary Yarn Slut.
- I am knitting the Babies’ & Bears Sweater for Grown-ups still out of 4-Play by Brooks Farm Yarn. I dream of knitting “Cable Vision” from Family Circle Easy Plus-Size Knits. I also want to knit the Lucy jacket from Naturally Noro, and the Fetching wrist covers from Knitty.
- I love my Hill Country Yarns Sweet Feet Sock Yarn.
- The gals at Mason-Dixon Knitting make me swoon a little, and not only do I want to knit washclothes, I want to knit my very own Swiffer cover!
- Thank you to Sara in Wisconsin for sharing her essay. She does not have a blog, but feel free to leave her props or questions here if you want. (If you want to share something on the show, post a comment and let me know!)
- Thank you again to Knitty D & The City, along with Cast-On, Lime & Violet and Its a Purl, Man for helping to spread the word that the show is back!
- Feel free to take the button in the sidebar, post it to your site, and spread the word about the podcast!

Thank you again to the wonderful musicians for sharing their talents; please support them by buying their music!

Great episode, Christine. You HAVE to come to Philadelphia, so that I can stalk you and Knitty D and Wendy. It would be fun. And btw, Lime and Violet live in Omaha, Nebraska.

Just listened to you for the first time today, great job on your podcast!
I am THRILLED that you mentioned the Red Scarf Project, and the photos from last year , well, they were mine- you probably found them through Norma’s fab sites. The Red Scarf Project is really special and I hope you’ll mention it again.
Anyhoo, I made up a poster with all the Red Scarf Project info. The Orphans Foundation used it at the Knit Out in NYC and Washington and now, its available for download (no charge) to anyone who’d like to print it out and post it at the knitting venue of their choice, to get the word out. We have till January to knit the red scarves and the Orphan Foundation is hoping for 2500 scarves to go into care packages for former foster kids who are now in college, going it alone and have no “home” to send the care packages. You can see the poster with those photos of recepients modeling last year’s scarves at my blog at

    Hi there!

I found your podcast a few weeks ago via Brenda’s Cast-On, and have listened to every episode now. It’s fun!

I know it’s hard finding the time to podcast when college and family and life in general all need your attention, but I for one would be very happy if you managed to put out a show every two weeks. :D

I’m trying my hands at my own knitting podcast — if you want to know how it sounds when a knitter talks obsessively about her craft in German, you can listen to it here:

Hi Christine. I always enjoy your podcast. I’m in Houston, too, so I identify with your comments on the weather and local shops. Please continue telling us all about the yarns you use and what you think of them. That is the best part of the show! I hope you do a show every two weeks!

Hi Christine, I’ve only just discovered the “world of knitting podcasts” and have immensely enjoyed listening to yours (while knitting away on a sock that I want so desperately to be finished so I can cast on a new sexy pair o__O) :) The sound is just fine, no worries there. Also, it was so funny to hear the Yarn Slut clip on your podcast :D I guess I’m not the only one out there who can identify herself with your yarn-obsession.. so many projects, so little time. And the current projects cannot be finished enough quickly to start another one!

And, I’m actually living in The Hague, Holland/The Netherlands (practically, it’s the same place ;)). So cool that your husband is here! It’s usually quite windy here because we’re near the sea, but although the weather has turned a bit colder (yay! Fall!), the sun is still warm and the wind calm. I hope he enjoys his stay here. In case he’s bringing home a souvenir.. try “Haagsche Hopjes”, they’re a hard, coffee-flavoured candy, you can get them everywhere in the city.

Good luck with the boring classes!

Christine, last week, I was visiting my family that all live in Houston, and I caught up on all your podcasts. I went to the RennFest on the 8th of October, for the first time. It was amazing! On your urging, I was able to go by Yarntopia on Saturday and wouldn’t have known about it if it wasn’t for your podcast. I hit four Houston yarn shops last week: Yarn 2 Ewe, Yarntopia, Merribee, and Nancy’s. They were all quite nice. You are lucky, we don’t have so many here in Oklahoma. Keep up the good work. I’ve a BS in Chemical Engineering and there are worse classes than Organic (like Organic II and Physical Chemistry I and II!). Memorize the reactions! Organic I is where I learned to drink Coffee.

I enjoy your voice and your discussion topics on the podcast. I’m eager to hear more about your knitting and life in Houston!

I’m glad that you enjoyed the Cardigan Details. Knitting Camp is wonderful, of course! But your sock knitting class with Nancy Bush will be awesome. I’ve taken classes from her before and she is soooo excellent! I took the Interweave Scandinavian Knitting Tour in 2004 with Nancy Bush. I gaurantee that you will enjoy her.
Thanks for another great podcast…for the Flying Fish again…and for coming back to the podcasting!
    Most Sincerely,
    Sara Kleefisch

Hey Christine! I’m so glad you’re back podcasting again. I missed you terribly, truly I did. I’m here in Philadelphia (well, reallyreallythisclose to it anyway) definitely feeling the first hints of fall so the subject matter hit home.

I have a comment about something you said - oh I think it was you. I really hope I’m not mixing you up with Pixie, Lime, KnittyD, Violet, or Wendy! I listened to a whole bunch of ‘casts the other day while working on a sweater for my son. Anyway, you-or-someone-but-I-think-you said something about a pattern calling a size 38 a large, and that was ridiculous because that is not really large. I don’t know what qualifies as “large,” but I wear a Gap/Old Navy medium T-shirt or sweater, and I have a 39″ bust. Just, you know, for the record :)

I look forward to the next episode! Oh, and also, I too had to suffer through O-chem. I feel your pain. I took it at two separate universities (got a D the first time and an A the second) and it sucked every minute of it.

You are so an honorary yarn slut!!! I think you may have surpassed Christina and I - a bag of Kochoran??? Good for you! I don’t have to feel so bad about my purchases when I listen to yours.

It was so much fun hearing our clip on your show! Please please please stalk us to Philly!

Hi Christine - another great podcast! I had to laugh at how excited you were that the temperature had dropped to the 70’s meaning it was chilly fall was in the air - listening to it as I walked the streets of San Francisco (the land of perpetual fall) where everyone was out & about in t-shirts and skirts because it was 70 degrees and so warm!

Thank you also for the link to the swiffer ‘cloth’ pattern - I have been avoiding buying more cloths for mine, also getting sick of dropping them in the dustbin after each use, but at the same time dismayed by the amount of dust building up under the furniture. This is the perfect solution! Can’t wait to break out the sugar & cream.

Already looking forward to the next podcast,

    Megan

    Hi Christine,
I love your podcast. It is one of my favorites and now, thanks to you, I am
also thoroughly enjoying Knitty D in the City. I’m in San Antonio, so I relate
to your commentary on the weather. Fortunately, it’s been “cool” the last few days and I even wore some handknit socks yesterday! Anyhow, I hope to make it to Boerne in a few weeks!

  • 13 Carrie // Oct 31, 2006 at 2:41 pm

I listened to your PodCast for the first time today while I was at work. It’s a great way to keep me mentally knitting while I’m at work ;). Great job on your podcast, it’s very informative and keeps me on my needles! Keep up the great work!

    Hi Christine,
I never use dish washing clothes but I love face clothes. Hand knit face clothes also make a great gift with some homemade soaps.

I have made them out of cotton, hemp, and linen. You might want to give it a try.

    Love the show!

    Carry.

Love your podcast, but please, please look up the correct pronunciation of “ply”. Keep up the good work.

  • 16 kristine // Nov 16, 2006 at 6:33 pm

Even though I knew I wasn’t going to be up to your skill level in knitting, I listened to this today. :D It was SO nice to hear your voice, and I really enjoyed listening. I’ll definitely be back to listen again :)
