Episode 8 - What I Did on my Summer Vacation, Part 2

September 13th, 2006 · 37 Comments

I have to say this up front so that we are clear - I was exhausted when I recorded this episode. I have had a super busy week (you can read all about it on BigPinkCookie if you are interested), so I am running on empty right now. This weekend can’t get here soon enough. So I apologize in advance for the rambling in this episode. The show was already 3 days late, and I couldn’t stand putting it off any longer!

I sold one company, and I’m starting something in a completely new direction with photography. Our first show is the first Saturday of November at the Yale Street Market in the Houston Heights. Speaking of photography, please check out Boobiethon and flash your *other* stash for breast cancer. Help Deb raise money to fight leukemia, the Dracula Blood. (Her daughter is looking for sponsors too!)

Join me every week for Finish It Friday! Be sure to post or e-mail photos - I want to hear about your finishing! It is a great time to weave in ends, attach sleeves, knit up a neckband. Your projects need your love. I am finishing my Clapotis, and the never-ending Baby Blanket is all done. I started socks that I am worried are going to be too small - again. I am knitting a sweater finally, and I LOVE Brooks Farm Yarn’s 4-Play! It is the BEST.

I review Knit Fix, which I really liked. It is full of way to fix the mistakes you make as quickly and painlessly as possible. You can follow the book tour online at several sites. (I’ll add the link list tomorrow, but I think Brenda Dayne has it listed on her site if you don’t want to wait.)

My first trip to Austin this summer involved Knit Flix night at Jo’s on S. Congress, organized by Susan of YarnBar. I’m so glad that Julia invited me - she is the best hostess! (Ok, she let me invite myself. Whatever.) I’ll add a link in for Sarah’s fabulous Longhorn Intarsia sweater. I met Caro, and I forgot to tell you all about her when I talked about the Harlot! Eep! (Next episode!)

I meant to visit Tara for just a night, but I refused to leave. When I did, thanks to the inspiration of Domino Magazine and Tara’s really helpful wisdom on finding an inspiration piece, I redecorated my bedroom. Ikea played a big roll in the makeover.

At the end of the month I returned to Austin to see The HARLOT! I sound like a goof babbling about her, but that was how she made me feel that day so I left it alone.

Thanks to Chris for the suggestion on naming the mp3 file. Also, be sure to check out the ability to listen to the show online.

Yes, I said it. I’m a comment whore. Leave one here, send an e-mail to podcast@ the domain, or record one using the Odeo link on the sidebar. Oh, and if you want to contribute to the show, there is a donation button, and I’m always happy to share essays, poetry, music or anything else you want to share.

Thank you again to the wonderful musicians for sharing their talents; please support them by buying their music!

ok I made through the rest of the episode. Not sure what you were worrying about! I loved hearing you all gushy about meeting the Great Yarn Harlot. I would have gushed too! Don’t be so hard on yourself!!

Here’s something to feed your comment whore ego on. *LOL*

    Great episode!

  • 10 Jennifer // Sep 15, 2006 at 7:05 pm

Great episode!! Don’t know what you were worried about! This will be my first Texas winter since I started doing socks, so I am counting on you that my feet won’t be sweating the three days it gets cold here. Hope school is going well!!

P.S. I am a Chemistry grad student up at UNT, so if you need any help at any point this summer, just let me know! :-)

Just wanted to let you know how much I enjoy your podcast. I like to pull out the pointy sticks to knit with you and the rest of the knit podcasters. This episode was just fine the way it is. Thanks!

Great podcast! I am a new listener and I have to say, I love your conversational tone. I had a wonderful time listening to your summer adventures. I was excited to hear you talk about your experience with blogging. I am thinking about starting a blog of my own and I am a little hesitant to just jump in without knowing the basics like, what makes a blog successful? What do readers expect from a blogger? Are there any un-written rules of blogging? Maybe you could come up with a list of the top five to ten dos and don’ts of blogging?? Just an idea! I’d love to be able to feel like more of a part of the worldwide network of knitter/bloggers.

Another great show! I saw the Yarn Harlot last week and thought she was hysterical! When are you going on the Pointy Sticks world tour?

  • 14 Lisa // Sep 16, 2006 at 9:22 am

Great podcast, Christine! I enjoyed every minute of it! You were the bright spot in my afternoon as I sat through the kids’ piano lessons and graded my first round of Science tests for this year. Thanks for keeping me company!

  • 15 Ruth // Sep 16, 2006 at 3:34 pm

    Hi Christine,

You know, I think I had the same wallpaper border you did! Mine was hunter green with mauve hearts and my walls were stark white textured sheetrock. It’s hard to believe I was once so proud of that border … and agonzied to long to pick it out!
Also, I’ve checked out the Brooks Farm Yarn; it’s to dye for! I wish I had known about it two weeks ago when I orderd the outrageously priced Tilli Tomas yarn for the Sexy Knitter’s Club knit along. I live in the Abilene area and love to support Texas fiber artists. Oh well, I’ll definitely use it some day. Thanks for a great Podcast.

    Hi Christine,

I just listened to your podcast and loved it! Keep up the good work - I’ve been very jealous of your trip to England and now the Yarn Harlot too! :-)

Thanks Christine for another great episode! I’ve enjoyed hearing about your summer.

  • 18 Jennifer // Sep 19, 2006 at 10:59 am

I just popped in to say hi…and I figured you would enjoy it, the comment whore you are… I hope classes are going well. I know o-chem is stressful, but just keep up with those reactions and you will be fine. Have a good day!

  • 19 Evelyn // Sep 21, 2006 at 6:46 am

    Christine,

I have to say that I’m a fan. I love your easy, conversational style. Just fabulous. I must say, however, that you should NEVER make excuses for the great work that you do. Most us us don’t know a thing about mixing audio tracks and all of that. You produce this awesome show for free for your fans to listen to while we knit, or drive, or as I often do, wash dishes. So keep on keeping on and we’ll keep listening.

    Bravo!

    Evelyn

Christine, Thanks for sharing your podcast. I love the opening song and I enjoy the episodes. You are the busiest person that I know…organic chemistry, knitting & art festivals. Your are crazy but amazing!
    Thanks for the entertainment.

Hi - I just started listening, and want to let you know how much I enjoy it? The opening song is hysterical! I listen while I walk, and danced along for a couple of steps before I realized what I was doing.

    Good luck with school!

  • 22 Cindy // Sep 23, 2006 at 1:08 pm

Love your pod cast. I’m working on the Babies and Bears sweater too. Instead of grafting the backs together, I did a 3-needle bind off. It was easy and looks great. Also, I did both sides of the jacket at the same time with the magic loop. The one I’m making is for a baby and I think it is too short so I’m adding a band around the bottom.
    Keep up the good work.

    Hi,
I hate weaving in ends myself.
Most of my dishcloths have ends hanging out.
That I don’t feel too bad about. But I have this pile of scarves and hats that I’ve knit for charity. None of them have ends weaved in.
    Thank you for the podcast.

  • 24 Sonia // Sep 27, 2006 at 6:01 pm

Hi Christine, I love your podcast! I’ve been listening to all your episodes, catching up because I’ve just discovered you and it’s just like talking to an old friend (except I’m doing all the listening!) I really enjoy your show, keep it coming!
    Thanks so much.

  • 25 Gayle // Sep 28, 2006 at 10:58 pm

Hey Christine, best of luck with your business and creative ventures. “Better Days to Come” is breathtakingly beautiful and so very true. Thanks tremendously for finding and playing it. Keep it up.

  • 26 Eric // Oct 2, 2006 at 4:12 am

Another great episode! Out of pure curiosity do you track search terms that hit your site? Lets see, in this episode you talk about the boobiethon, flashing your stash and stripping (wallpaper) If those things are searchable I bet you have a very popular episode! There was a funny thread over on knitters review about search terms used to find various knitting blogs. BTW thanks for podcasting!

Is there a problem with the file for episode 8? I’ve tried several times now to download it and keep getting a “file not found” error.

  • 28 Kayleigh // Oct 25, 2006 at 8:06 pm

I can’t download episode 8 either :( But other than that, FANTASTIC shows in general!!! I love your podcast :) It has been keeping me happy on various buses in New Zealand.

    Hi Christine,
I too am unable to download episode 8 from your web site. Apparently this file is corrupt or doesn’t exist: http://media.libsyn.com/media/pointysticks/pointysticks_ep8.mp3. Can you let me know how I can get that episode?
    Thanks!

I’ve enjoyed listening to your podcasts. I’m catching up one by one and this podcast, I’m unable to download. I get an error when I try to do it and can’t download it through iTunes either. I’d love to get a copy of this episode too.
    Thanks.

    Hi

I can’t be bothered with anything these days, but shrug. I just don’t have anything to say recently.

    Bye
